Old Dominon took an early 1-0 at 16:39 in the first half when junior forward Melanie McGovern took junior forward Jen Henley's pass and beat Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) on a breakaway with a shot to the far post after beating the Blue Devil defense to score her team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Duke had many scoring opportunities in the first half, including one with five seconds remaining in the first half when Pickens' shot deflected off the goal post. The Blue Devils managed to outshot the Lady Monarchs 13-3, but managed no goals.
Senior forward Susan Kraeger (St. Louis, Mo.) netted her first goal of the year at 75:13 to tie the score at 1-1 after freshman forward Gwendolyn Oxenham's (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) cross was deflected from Pickens to Kraeger, who beat Old Domion goalkeeper Tonya Desmond.
The game remained tied until 83:33 when Pickens scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year as she headed home Oxenham's cross to give Duke the 2-1 victory.
Helgadottir made three saves as she improved her record to 5-0 on the year while Desmond made 11 saves in the loosing effort.
Duke returns to action on Tues., Oct. 17 when they host ACC foe N.C. State at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
