GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 28) - On a biter cold and windy evening the No. 5-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team lost 4-1 to No. 2 Duke March 28, and in the process snapped the Gator's 64-match regular-season home winning streak. Florida (13-1) had not lost a regular season home match since Texas topped the Gators 5-3 on March 17, 1994. That year was the only other time Duke (12-1) has defeated Florida in 25 meetings.
"Sure we had our opportunities, but give Duke credit for hanging through those tough and important points," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "Duke was more match-tough than we were. The really battled better than we did today."
Duke freshman Ansley Cargill, ranked No. 2 in the country, rallied from a 5-0 first-set deficit against UF senior Whitney Laiho, ranked No. 10, to provide the clinching dual match point with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 position.
Florida opened the match sweeping the three doubles matches. The Gator freshman duo of Annika Bengtsson and Lindsay Dawaf were the first pair off the court after defeating Katie Granson and Kathy Sell 8-3 at the No. 3 position.
The Gator's No. 2 team of Stephanie Hazlett and Julia Scaringe notched the clinching win for the doubles point downing Hillary Adams and Amanda Johnson 8-4 at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 1 position, UF's Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff found themselves trailing Ansley Cargil and Megan Miller 5-3, but rallied to secure the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win.
Hillary Adams provided Duke with its first dual match point of the evening after controlling Annika Bengtsson 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
At the No. 3 position, UF's Lindsay Dawaf lost a hard-fought battle with Amanda Johnson 7-5, 7-6 (7). Johnson earned a service break in the 11th game of the first set and then held serve to take the opening frame. The second set featured six service breaks in the first seven games and eventually a tiebreaker was needed to determine the set winner. In the tiebreaker Dawaf took a quick 3-1 lead, but Johnson rallied for a 6-4 lead. Dawaf swatted away three match points, but couldn't prevent Johnson on the fourth.
UF senior Stephanie Hazlett limped though her No. 4 singles match against 15th-ranked Kathy Sell. Hazlett worn a brace on her left knee for the first time since re-aggravating it during UF's last match. Similar to Dawaf, Hazlett let opportunities slip past. She trailed 3-0 early, but charged back and was serving for the first set at 5-3, before Sell ripped off the next four games to take the opening set. Hazlett then raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second and then was serving at 5-3, but again Sell battled back and controlled the tiebreaker to take the match 7-5, 7-6 (3).
