CHAPEL HILL, NC - The Duke women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie Sunday afternoon against 2nd-ranked North Carolina at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Duke's goalkeeper, Thora Helgadottir, tallied nine saves in her second shutout of the season. With the shutout, she moved into fourth place in Duke's all-time goalie shutouts with 11.5.
With time winding down in regulation, Helgadottir made four outstanding saves in just over four minutes of play. In the 12th minute, North Carolina's Alyssa Ramsey attempted to score, but Helgadottir slid feet first toward the ball and kicked it away from the net. Seconds later, Tar Heel Anne Morrell attempeted another shot, but again, Helgadottir kicked the ball away.
Then in the ninth minute, North Carolina's Anne Felts would have scored, but Helgadottir made a dive to left side of the net to knock the ball away. At the 7:52 mark, Tar Heel Lindsay Tarpley attempted another goal, but the junior from Iceland leaped in to the air and tapped it in the air before catching the ball.
With the tie, Duke ended a 13 match losing streak against the Tar Heels.
The Blue Devils (6-8-2, 1-3-2) have two regular season matches remaining. They return home on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. to face in-state rival High Point on Senior Night and then travel to Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
