DURHAM, N.C. - The 19th-ranked Clemson Lady Tigers spoiled Duke's ACC home opener by defeating the Blue Devils 3-2 in double overtime at Koskinen Stadium Saturday night. Freshmen Carolyn Riggs and Carmen Bognanno both scored goals for Duke.
Clemson's Deliah Arrington caused problems all night long for the Blue Devils and scored two goals including the game winner. In the 103rd minute, Arrington moved around a Duke defender on the right side of the field and from 18 yards out shot the ball straight into the net to give the Lady Tigers the win.
Duke (5-6, 0-2) appeared to be on a roll early in the match as Riggs scored at the 7:56 mark. About 12 feet in front of the net, several Duke and Clemson players were kicking the ball around when Riggs got a hold of it and kicked it past Clemson's goalkeeper to score her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Then in the 22nd minute Duke had a corner kick. The ball was tossed around until a Clemson defender kicked the ball out about 30 yards right to Bognanno. The freshman midfielder, who would later leave the game due to an injury, immediately kicked the ball right over the goalkeepers head and into the net for Duke's second goal of the game and her second of the season.
But, Clemson (7-4, 2-1) cut the lead to 2-1 when Arrington broke free from a defender and ran toward the goal. Duke's goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir came out to get the ball, but Arrington lobbed the ball over her head to score her first goal of the game at 27:37. The score didn't change until the 65th minute when Heather Beem had a straight shot from the top of the box to tie the game 2-2.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. when the face another conference rival, Florida State.
