DURHAM, N.C. - In the fifth overtime game of the year, the Duke women's soccer team tied ACC rival and 17th ranked Florida State, 1-1, at Koskinen Stadium Tuesday night. It is the third time this season the Blue Devils have gone into double overtime and the first match that ended in a tie. Duke is 2-2-1 in overtime games.
For the second time this season, Duke's Casey McCluskey scored less than four minutes into the game. On a breakaway from the right side of the field, the sophomore midfielder dribbled to the top of the box and had a wide open shot that went past Florida State's goalkeeper Kerry York. It was McCluskey's fifth goal of the season.
In the first period both teams were evenly matched with the exception of 11 Duke fouls to Florida State's three. Duke outshot the Seminoles 8-6 in the first half.
Almost halfway through the second period, Florida State's Jez Ratliff scored when Katie Beal crossed to Camie Bybee who kicked it to Ratliff for the game tying goal off a free kick at the 65:46 mark.
The match was very physical with 43 total fouls and five yellow cards given out; three to Florida State and two to Duke.
Duke is 5-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the ACC, while Florida State, who is tied for first place in the league is 7-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference.
Duke's next match is Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Durham against conference rival N.C. State.
