GAINESVILLE, FLA. - Duke sophomore Casey McCluskey was determined not to lose a second match this season in overtime. The midfielder from Springfield, Va., scored both of Duke's goals to defeat Florida in overtime, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the University of Florida's Adidas Showdown in Gainesville, Fla.
Less than three minutes left in the first half, McCluskey was fouled in the box and kicked a penalty kick that scored the first goal of the game, and her third of the season.
The match appeared to be a Blue Devil victory, as the score remained 1-0, until just before the end of regulation. Although the Blue Devils were outshot in the first and second periods, 14-8, the Gators were unable to score until Monica Hoyles crossed to Candace Rivers who kicked the ball in from 10 yards out at the 87:35 mark.
It didn't take long for McCluskey to score the game winning goal, though, as just a little more than two minutes elapsed in overtime when McCluskey scored an eight-yard shot off a breakaway. It was her fourth goal of the season and she leads the team in goals and points (11).
Duke will be home next weekend for the first time since August 30. The Blue Devils will be hosting the Duke adidas Classic on Friday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 22. Teams participating in the classic are Florida International, Marquette, and ACC rival North Carolina.
