DURHAM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils pounded Florida International 5-0, behind two goals from freshman Carolyn Riggs, in the second game of the Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic on Friday at Koskinen Stadium.
Riggs scored her first shot when junior Gwendolyn Oxenham headed the ball to freshman Shelly Marshall, who assisted Riggs with a shot from six yards out at the 25:59 mark. Almost a minute later (26:55), she recorded her second goal of the match, an unassisted shot from 18 yards out. She is tied for the lead on the Blue Devils team with four goals.
Duke also had goal form sophomore Lauren Simel, her second of the season, when Riggs got in the action again with a cross to Simel who had a wide open shot at the 56:01 mark. Less than three minutes later (58:32), Marshall assisted classmate Carolyn Ford who had a header off of a corner kick. Oxenham completed the scoring for the game at the 79:19 mark with an assist from Carmen Bognanno from the top of the box.
Duke improved to 5-2, while Florida International dropped to 0-6-1.
In the opening contest, top ranked North Carolina defeated Marquette 4-1, but the Golden Eagles gave the Tar Heels a scare when Marquette's Anne Dalecky scored on a penalty kick at the 3:40 mark and led at the half 1-0. North Carolina came back in the second half and scored four unanswered goals.
The Tar Heels first goal came at the 58:47 mark when Susan Bush scored on a penalty kick to tie the game. Mary McDonald scored an unassisted 25 yard game winning goal less than a minute later (59:20). North Carolina also had unassisted goals by Anne Felts (75:41) and Anne Morrell (85:10).
North Carolina (6-0-1) continued their unbeaten streak, while Marquette fell to 5-2-0.
The Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic will conclude on Sunday when Florida International and North Carolina square off in the 11:30 a.m. contest and Marquette battles Duke at 2:00 p.m.
