DURHAM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils fell to Marquette 2-1, in the final game of the Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first half as Marquette outshot Duke 3-1. The Golden Eagles did take advantage of one of their shots as Kate Gordon scored from the right side and 10 yards out at the 8:26 mark.
Anne Iodor had an unassisted goal early in the second half from 12 yards out to give Marquette a 2-0 advantage. It wasn't until half way through the second period when Duke became more offensively oriented, as they had 10 of their 11 shots in the second half
Freshman Carolyn Riggs scored Duke's only goal of the game at the 68:26 mark when she headed a ball in to the net from classmate Shelly Marshall. It was Riggs' third goal of the tournament and fifth on the season. She leads the Blue Devils with five goals and 11 points. Marshall leads the team with four assists on the season.
Duke fell to 5-3, while Marquette improved to 6-2 on the season.
In the opening contest, top-ranked North Carolina defeated Florida International 6-0, behind two goals from Lindsay Tarpley in the first half. Alyssa Ramsey, Anne Felts, Lindsay Tarpley and Brynn Hardman also had goals. Lori Chalupny had two assists and Susan Bush had one.
North Carolina (7-0-1) continued their unbeaten streak, while Florida International fell to 0-7-1.
Duke travels to Maryland to open the ACC season on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then down to the University of Georgia on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.. The Blue Devils return home for the ACC opener on Saturday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m. against Clemson.
