COLLEGE PARK, MD - The 17th-ranked Blue Devil's fell to host Maryland, 3-2, in Duke's ACC women's soccer opener on Friday night at Ludwig Field. It was Maryland's sixth win in seven games against the Blue Devils and it continued an eight-game streak in the Maryland-Duke series where the lower-ranked or unranked team has come away the victor.
Maryland's Kim King blasted a penalty kick past Duke keeper Thora Helgadottir in the 66th minute for the decisive goal. Maryland (6-3, 1-1 ACC) was awarded the kick after forward Katie Ludwig was taken down in the box by freshman Kate Seibert.
Duke (5-4, 0-1) cut the Terrapin lead to 3-2 in the 73rd minute as senior midfielder Liz Wagner found the net, her second goal of the season, off a scramble in front of the Terrapin goal, but Maryland held off several late Duke challenges to capture the win.
Ludwig gave Maryland their second lead of the game as she outraced three Duke defenders on a breakaway and deposited the ball into the Blue Devil net at the 57:01 mark to give the Terps a 2-1 lead.
The Terrapins jumped on top early as Maryland's Lindsay Givens' long throw-in went through the hands of Helgadottir in the 6th minute for an own goal. Helgadottir was playing in her first game of the year after recovering from an injury and returning from a stint with the Iceland national team.
Duke countered in the 38th minute when freshman Carolyn Riggs connected on a breakaway from classmate Carolyn Ford that beat Terrapin netminder Kristin Barnhill who replaced an injured Mariel Wilner late in the first half. It was Riggs' sixth goal of the season and fourth goal in three games. She leads the Blue Devils with six goals and 13 points.
Duke travels to the University of Georgia on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.. The Blue Devils return home for the ACC home opener on Saturday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m. against Clemson.
