CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 17 Duke lost to No. 11 Washington, 4-3 in double overtime. But, Duke continued to share the scoring as senior Liz Wagner and freshman Carolyn Ford scored their first goals of the season.
The Blue Devils got rolling early as Casey McCluskey scored her second goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. A Washington defender placed the ball perfectly to McCluskey, who shot from nine yards out to take a 1-0 lead.
Duke scored again at the 26:19 mark when Kate Seibert assisted Wagner for a 2-0 lead. But, the Huskies weren't about to give up, and at 39:31 Washington's Blair Ruport scored from 10 yards out off a turnover.
Washington made some adjustments at half-time, and scored two more goals within three minutes at the 59:49 and 62:37 marks in the second period. But, with less than 10 minutes left in the match, Heidi Hollenbeck's shot hit the cross bar and Ford rebounded and scored to tie the game 3-3.
The Blue Devils outshot the Huskies 2-1 in the first overtime, but at the 105:50 mark in the second overtime, Washington's Nicole Martinez scored off a corner kick for the 4-3 win.
Duke outshot the Huskies 16-12, the third consecutive match Duke has outshot their opponent in as many matches. All three of Duke's matches this season have been against top 15 ranked teams, decided by one goal, and two games have gone in to sudden death.
The Blue Devil's (1-2) return to the Nike Carolina Classic on Sunday to face Wofford at 3:00 p.m. Washington faces (3-0) North Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
