CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seventeenth-ranked Duke got back on the winning track by defeating Wofford 2-0 Sunday afternoon. It was their first shutout of the season as the Blue Devils held the Terriers to just two shots the entire match.
Duke dominated the first half with a 13-to-0 shot advantage and 6-to-1 corner kick advantage, but unable to get the ball through the goal posts until Lauren Simel got the Blue Devils on the board just before half time. At the 43:44 mark, teammate Kate Seibert passed the ball to Casey McCluskey who kicked it to wide-open Simel. From four yards out and Wofford's goakkeeper the only defender in her way, Simel scored her first goal of the season.
The second half was similar to the first as Wofford (0-2-1) was unable to get anthing going offensivley and Duke continued to outshoot their opponent. At the 59:35 mark, Carmen Bognanno's shot hit the cross bar. Brigid Bowdell rebounded the missed shot and kicked the ball in for the final goal of the game.
Liz Wagner was named to the Nike Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team. The senior midfielder from Lakewood, Colo., was also named Duke's MVP, played the entire game (105:50 min.) and scored one goal in Friday nights 4-3 double overtime loss to Washington.
Four games in to the season McCluskey, a sophomore, leads the way for the Blue Devils with two goals and one assist for five points. Six of her teammates have also scored goals and 10 Blue Devils have at least one point.
The Blue Devils (2-2) travel to Gainesville, Fla., next weekend for the Adidas Showdown at the University of Florida. Duke takes on Central Florida at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and faces Florida at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Blue Devils return home the following weekend for the Duke Adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium.
