DURHAM, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels registered four goals in the first 15 minutes of action and went on to defeat 10th-ranked Duke, 4-0, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Tar Heel sophomore Lindsay Tarpley collected a hat trick on the night scoring the first two goals and adding a fourth off a shot from 12 yards from Alyssa Ramsey and Heather O'Reilly. Kendall Fletcher tapped in the third goal of the night off a corner kick from Ramsey and O'Reilly.
"North Carolina came out and finished its opportunities like great teams do," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "You have to give credit to Carolina as they were ready to play and I thought we were also. They came at us hard and we didn't handle their pressure early."
After North Carolina went up 2-0, the Blue Devils had one of their best scoring opportunities of the contest at the 6:30 mark as sophomore Carmen Bognanno had a left-footed rocket from 20 yards which was saved by UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget. Junior Casey McCluskey also had a point-blank shot with four minutes left in the match, but it just sailed over the crossbar.
North Carolina outshot the Blue Devils 17-10 for the game. Senior Thora Helgadottir collected five saves in goal for Duke, while Winget netted the victory and finished with six saves.
"Anytime you make a mistake, North Carolina will punish you," said Church. "I am very, very proud of our team because we could of folded out tents and gone home, but we fought, battled and came back to play respectively in the second half."
North Carolina will receive points towards the Carlyle Cup, an all-sports competition between Duke and UNC. The Carlyle Cup is sponsored by Carlyle & Company, the Greensboro, N.C. based jeweler.
Duke falls to 7-3-1, 0-1 in the ACC, while North Carolina improves to 12-0-0, 1-0 ACC. The Blue Devils will next host ninth-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in another key ACC match.
