DURHAM, N.C. - Duke sophomore Carmen Bognanno collected her second goal of the season just 35 seconds into the match as the 10th-ranked Blue Devils downed ninth-ranked Wake Forest, 1-0, on Saturday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
"It is huge when you score a goal in the first minute of the game and it puts everybody back on their heals," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "It is a tribute to our team that they were ready to play the first minute of the game."
Blue Devil freshman Darby Kroyer started the game-winning play for Duke as she drove the ball down the field and hit freshman Lauren Tippets on the right side. Then, Tippets sent a perfect cross over to the left edge of the goal for Bognanno, which used her left foot from 12 feet out to beat Wake Forest goalkeeper Kenna Healy. A St. Louis, Mo., product, Bognanno now leads the team with two game-winning goals.
Senior Thora Helgadottir did the job the rest of the night in goal for the Blue Devils. A Kopavogur, Iceland native, Helgadottir registered her 14th shutout of her career as she finished with four saves. The rest of the Blue Devil defense- Carolyn Ford, Kate Seibert, Rachel-Rose Cohen and Carly O'Connor allowed only four shots on the night and the shutout marks the fifth time this season Duke has held an opponent scoreless.
For the game, Duke outshot Wake Forest, 14-4. Prior to the game, the Demon Deacons had allowed only six goals all season long.
Duke improves to 8-3-1, 1-1 in ACC action, while Wake Forest falls to 8-2-1, 0-1. It marks the fifth straight win for the Blue Devils against the Demon Deacons and Duke now improves to 5-0 in Durham against Wake Forest.
The Blue Devils will be on the road for the next two league matches at Florida State on Oct. 10 and at N.C. State on Oct. 15. Both contests will begin at 7:00 p.m.
