CARY, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Duke women's soccer team registered its ninth victory of the season on Wednesday as the Blue Devils dominated N.C. State, 3-1, at the SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C. Duke improves to 9-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while N.C. State falls to 7-6-1, 0-4.
"It is a great win," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "Anytime you can get a win on the road in the ACC is just a huge boost. For us to score three very nice goals was big because we haven't scored a lot recently. I am very proud of them after coming back from a tough game at Florida State and dominate tonights match."
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first half as freshman Darby Kroyer settled a Shelly Marshall pass and rocketed her third goal of the season into the far right corner of the net to beat N.C. State goalkeeper Megan Connors. The Blue Devils controlled the first half with many scoring opportunities as Duke outshot the Wolfpack, 6-2.
"Darby hit a great shot," commented Church. "We were really searching for ways to score goals and for her to hit a bomb from outside was big time for us."
After coming off the bench in the first half, sophomore Carolyn Riggs collected her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 53:26 mark in the second stanza. Riggs received the ball in front of the box and placed it on the right side of the net, off assists from Casey McCluskey and Gwendolyn Oxenham.
Sophomore Kate Seibert gave Duke a 3-0 lead in the 67th minute as the Downingtown, Pa., product hit from 18 yards out. N.C. State added a late goal by Mandela Schumacher-Hodge in the 77th minute for the Wolfpack.
With two assists on the evening, Oxenham now leads Duke with seven assists on the season.

Junior Kate Straka played the final 14 minutes allowing one goal and finishing with one save. Duke outshot N.C. State 12-10 for the game.
"I thought Casey McCluskey played an excellent game for us tonight," said Church. "She was all over the field as a high and low midfielder. I thought she was a spark plug for us."
With the victory, Duke matches its overall win total of 2002 with nine victories. The Blue Devils will next host fourth-ranked Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
