RALEIGH, N.C. - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams won a combined eight events, but it was not enough to overtake NC State Friday at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center. The Blue Devil women fell 95-148, while the men were clipped 101-136. With the losses, both Blue Devil teams move to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC, as the Wolfpack improves to 1-1, 1-1 on the men's side and 3-1, 1-1 for the women.
Duke opened the meet with a win in the women's 400 medley relay. Michelle Aristeo, Amy Brown, Katie Ness and Julia Lewis finished the race in 3:56.60, nearly three seconds ahead of the nearest competition from NC State. The team's prowess in relays continued as Danielle Spearman, Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg and Lewis earned first place in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:33.91.
Lewis also earned an individual victory in the 50 free (24.61), followed closely by Spearman, who finished second in 24.76. Anna Rodriguez took a decisive victory in the 200 breastroke event, coming in at 2:21.41, just under four seconds ahead of the next swimmer.
On the men's side, Matt Rinehart began the scoring efforts for the men in the 200 freestyle with a 1:45.49 first-place finish, while John Humphrey took first in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.77, in addition to earning second place in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:57.29. Kevin Arthofer and Andy Storm continued the effort with a first and second place finish, respectively, in the 200 breast
On the diving boards, Tim Hyer captured first place in the three-meter event with 280.28 points after coming in second in the one-meter competition.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, November 6 with their first home meet of the season against East Carolina at 1 p.m.
