FAIRFAX, Va. - Duke University's women's swimming & diving team maintained its lead and closed out the three-day Patriot Invitational as the winner with 863 points Sunday evening at the Aquatic & Fitness Center, while Yale University's men's team claimed the title with 797.50 after sitting in second for the first two days.
Jackie Rodriguez placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke for the Blue Devils in a time of 2:19.52 and continues to hold the meet record as she set it during last year's Patriot Invitational on Nov. 23 (2:17.74). Duke's 400 freestyle relay team of Katie Ness, Alison Sundberg, Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis placed first (3:31.33), while the Blue Devils captured the second through fifth spots in the 100 free with Lewis placing second in a time of 52.05.
Day 2- November 20
After 26 events and two days of competition, Duke University's swimming and diving teams continue to sit in first, out of 11 teams, at the Patriot Invitational with action taking place at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. George Mason's women's team is fourth with a score of 285, while the men are sixth with 191 points.
The men garnered two first place finishes for the Blue Devils, both of which turned out to be new meet records. Kevin Arthofer swam the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.35 for the new record, while Duke's 200 medley relay team of David Peck, Arthofer, John Humphrey and Billy Pearce also set a new record with a time of 1:32.75. The women's team placed first in six events for the Blue Devils, which included a first place finish by Katie Ness in the 100 butterfly (56.80).
Day 1- November 19
The Blue Devils closed out the first day of competition at the Patriot Invitational in first place, out of 11 teams, in both the men's and women's categories after 12 events at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. George Mason stands in fifth place for both teams with 106 points on the women's side and 119 for the men.
For the Blue Devils, the women have 263 points, while the men's team has 265.50 points heading into the second day of competition. The women garnered four first place finishes for Duke, including a first place showing by Katie Ness in the 200 IM (2:04.24). Earlier in the day, Ness broke the meet record in the same event during preliminary competition as she finished in a time of 2:03.98. The men's team collected two first place nods for Duke, including a first place finish by John Humphrey in the 200 IM (1:53.27) as he edged out Kunakorn Yimsomruay of UMBC (1:53.52).
Duke broke another meet record as the men's 400 medley relay placed first in a record-setting time of 3:24.52, about two and a half seconds faster than Seton Hall's `A Team'.
