PHILADELPHIA - Competing against its highest-quality opponents of the year, an injury-depleted Duke squad submitted a seventh-place performance at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia. The tournament featured ranked teams such as Penn and Rider. Highlights for the Blue Devils included four top-four finishers, including two placers at 133 pounds.
Brian Gibson and Wes Kuser were the two Blue Devils wrestling at 133, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Gibson, the eighth seed at the tournament, picked up a victory in the championship bracket before losing to the top seed, 5-2. He came back in the consolation bracket to win four straight matches, including a win in overtime over the third-seeded Jeff Eveleth of Penn, and a defeat of his teammate, Kuser, 10-9, for third place. Kuser recovered from a loss in the same round as Gibson to reel off three straight wins before the two met for third place.
Levi Craig, returning from an injury the week before, came away with a fourth place finish at 174 pounds. Both losses were to the same wrestler, but Craig also came away with wins over the number-two seed and teammate Scott Doerr, who managed to come away with two wins himself.
Mark Thompson, a 197-pounder, rounded out the placing for the Blue Devils, also taking fourth, with two pins. Thompson has now placed at every tournament this season and boasts a 13-3 record. Also at 197 was freshman Konrad Dudziak, who picked up two victories and missed placing by one match.
The biggest loss of the day for Duke was of Christian Smith, the top seed at 125 pounds, who was knocked out in his first match. Leading the match early against the eventual fourth-place finisher, Smith sustained a shoulder injury. He finished the match, losing in three overtimes, before defaulting out of the tournament.
Also missing from the lineup was Steve Smith, still recovering from a knee injury. Smith had placed second in the first two tournaments of the season at 165 pounds.
Duke had two competitors at 149. Zach Weisberg had an impressive opening round win over Chris Coppollo of Boston University, 9-5, before losing to the top seed in the following match. Antwone Floyd posted a 2-2 record, running into the eventual champion in the quarterfinals and losing, but recovered to take a win in the consolation bracket. At 141, Daniel Shvartsman picked up one win, a 7-5 overtime match, and missed placing by one round.
The Blue Devils are off until Dec. 17 when they travel to Newark, Del. for the Beast of the East event.
