DURHAM, N.C. - As the Duke swimming and diving team begins practice for the 2004-05 campaign, a familiar face can be seen along the deck of the pool. Swimming and diving head coach Bob Thompson announced the hiring of Lauren Hancock as the assistant swimming coach earlier this summer. Hancock, a 2004 Duke graduate and a standout swimmer for the Blue Devils, made her mark in the school and conference ranks throughout her time as a student-athlete.
"Lauren is a very highly motivated athlete, and in turn she will be a highly motivated coach and recruiter," Thompson said. "After being here four years, she knows the program and university well and understands the expectations of our student-athletes."
Hancock brings a wealth of swimming experience and an energetic outlook into her new post.
"I'm very excited to be able to give back to Duke swimming because it gave me so much," she said. "It was a huge part of my college experience and I want to be able to give other swimmers the same opportunity."
As a member of the Blue Devils swim team, Hancock swam primarily in the Fly and IM events, earning personal bests of 56.69 in the 100 Fly, 2:01.18 in the 200 Fly and 2:04.73 in the 200 IM. A team captain during the 2003-04 season, she led the team to a strong showing at the ACC Championships, coming in 16th in the 200 IM and 14th in the 100 Fly with her personal best time of 56.69. During her time at Duke, Hancock swam on Duke's record-setting 200 medley, 400 medley and 800 free relays at the 2002 ACC Championship Finals and placed in the top 15 eight times in the conference finals.
