CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Duke junior Parker Goyer and senior Lauren Archer both won their first match but fell in the second at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Qualifying Tournament Thursday. Goyer and Archer were trying to finish in the top eight to advance to the main draw of the regional tournament, which begins Friday at North Carolina.
Goyer defeated Charlotte's Kathy Robey, 6-4, 6-4, in her first match to advance to the Round of 16, where she fell to North Carolina's Alex Jurewitz, again 6-4, 6-4. Goyer and Jurewitz last competed at the UNC Invitational in November, with Goyer winning 6-3, 6-4.
Despite losing her first set of the day, Archer battled back to win the match with Kentucky's Caroline Winebrenner, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Archer again played a three-set match in the Round of 16 but lost to North Carolina's Lauren Reichert, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Archer and Goyer recovered, winning 8-0 in the doubles round of 64 and will compete Friday at 4 p.m. against second-seeded Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk of Kentucky. Also in doubles action, sophomore Clelia Deltour and freshman Tara Iyer defeated Winthrop's Ana Paula Novaes and Paula Takahashi, 8-3, to advance to the round of 32, where they will face another Kentucky pair, Liis Sober and Caroline Winebrenner.
Several other Duke players will compete in Friday's main draw. Melissa Mang, Jennifer Zika, Jackie Carleton, Iyer, Deltour, Kristin Cargill and Jessi Robinson will all compete in the singles bracket, while the teams of Daniela Bercek and Robinson, Mang and Zika and Cargill and Carleton will pair up in doubles to vy for spots in the Nov. 3-6 ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships.
Regional main draw action begins at 8 a.m. Friday at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
