DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke Swimming and Diving team opens its 2005-06 slate Saturday with a home meet against William & Mary and Atlantic Coast Conference opponent N.C. State. at 2 p.m. at the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. The contest will be the first for Dan Colella, who is in his first year as the head coach of the Duke program.
“I am very excited about Saturday's meet,” said Colella, who served as the head coach of the women's swimming team at the University of Tennessee for 12 years. “We have spent a lot of time educating our student-athletes in the fundamentals of race strategy, and it will be fun to see that in action. I think we can have a great showing if we really stick to our game plan.”
The women's squad returns a class of six seniors, two of whom competed over the summer at the USA Swimming ConocoPhilips National Championships. Katie Ness, a 2004 ACC Champion in the 200 IM, and Nora Stupp both made appearances at the prestigious event, which featured some of the nation's top swimmers.
“I have seen a lot of positives and a lot of potential with this group,” Colella said. “I think they have the opportunity to have a great meet, and hopefully we will take it down to the last relay.”
With just two seniors, the men's team doesn't boast as much experience, but 15 men return from a squad that set seven school records in 2004-05. Six of those 15 reached the finals of the ACC Championship last year.
N.C. State and Duke will both be competing in their first swimming and diving meet, while William & Mary has one win under its belt already. The Tribe downed conference opponent Towson Saturday. The meet is the first of back-to-back home events for Duke. After a meet on Oct. 22 against Wilmington for the men and Richmond and Wilmington for the women, the Blue Devils will hit the road for three meets before taking a break until January.
Saturday's meet will begin at 2 p.m .at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion on the campus of Duke University.
