DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke swimming and diving team will be back in action Saturday when it hosts the second of back-to-back home contests. Both men and women will battle UNC Wilmington, while the women will also face Richmond in the 2 p.m. meet at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
Both teams compiled 1-1 records in their first meet last weekend, defeating William & Mary but falling to N.C. State. The women started out strong, claiming the first and second spots in the first event, the 400 medley relay, to put early points on the board. Three different Blue Devil women earned individual event titles in their first meet of the season, with senior Julia Lewis tying for first in the 50-yard freestyle, junior Jackie Rodriguez championing the 200 breaststroke and senior Katie Ness picking up wins in both the 200 IM and 200 backstroke.
On the men's side, senior Andy Storm earned his first win of the year with a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. Freshman Nick Campisano, diving in only his second collegiate meet, posted an NCAA Zone Championship qualifying mark of 303.37 on the one-meter diving board. Campisano will compete in the zone championships March 10-12 in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA finals March 23-25.
The Blue Devils faced Wilmington and Richmond on the road last year and will welcome the home advantage this time. Though Duke lost to both teams last January, the women gave up a close decision to Wilmington, 129-114. While the Blue Devils have one meet under their belts already, both Wilmington and Richmond will open their seasons Saturday.
Action begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion on Duke's west campus.
