PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF.- Duke junior transfer Daniela Bercek's bid to win an eighth collegiate grand slam title for the Blue Devil women's tennis team fell one win short on Sunday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship as she lost, 6-3, 6-4, to third-seeded Nicole Leimbach of TCU in the singles title match in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Bercek had won seven straight matches prior to Sunday's play and had not lost a set in the previous four contests at the Riviera All-American during the week. Last season, Bercek played Leimbach three times while at UCLA and won all three matches.
“It was a good experience for her and is the furthest she has advanced in a grand slam tournament in her career,” said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. “At the same time, she knows she can be the best player in the country if she puts the work and effort into it. She knows it is right there for her.”
Also on the week, Bercek teamed with freshman Jessi Robinson to advance to the quarterfinals of doubles action and knocked off the fourth-ranked duo of Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth, 8-6, along the way.
The tournament is the first of three national events for collegiate women's tennis players throughout the year, including the National Intercollegiate Indoors in November and the spring NCAA Championships, and was won by Ansley Cargill in 2000, Kelly McCain in 2002 and Vanessa Webb in 1996.
