BOONE, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team posted four top-ten finishes at the UNC Pembroke Open over the weekend, highlighted by two second-place finishes from senior Scott Doerr and freshman Wade Van Sickle. The Blue Devils then went 0-3 at the MatJam Duals on Sunday, falling to No. 22 Tennessee-Chattanooga, 32-3, Appalachian State, 21-16, and VMI, 22-15.
At the UNC Pembroke Open, Doerr captured his second-place finish at 165 pounds, while Van Sickle finished second in the heavyweight division. Freshman John Barone notched a fourth-place finish at 174 pounds and freshman Mike Tunick placed sixth in the heavyweights.
The Blue Devils then hit the mats at Appalachian State for the MatJam Duals on Sunday. In their first match, Duke fell to No. 22 Tennessee-Chattanooga, 32-3. Sophomore Turner Rooney captured the only Blue Devil victory, defeating T.J. Sayers, 7-6, in the 174-pound weight class.
Duke squared off against host Appalachian State in their second match of the day, falling to the Mountaineers, 21-16. The Blue Devils captured four wins in the match against Appalachian State. Sophomore Kellan McKeon defeated Adam Wilson, 7-0, at 125 pounds, junior Philip Wightman won by fall over Ryan Scott at 141 pounds, junior Zach Weisberg won his match, 8-4, over Nick Lukacs at 149 pounds, and Van Sickle defeated Jared Campbell, 3-1, at the heavyweight division.
In their final match of the day, the Blue Devils fell to VMI, 22-15. Three Duke grapplers captured victories against the Keydets. Sophomore Aaron Glover defeated Chris Hardy, 9-5, in the 165-pound weight class, sophomore Dan Fox won his match over Kyle Elgert, 5-2, at 184 pounds, and junior Patrick Keenum defeated Niels Madsen, 5-1, at 197 pounds.
The Duke wrestling team will hit the mats again on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. The Blue Devils posted four top-five finishes at last year's Keystone Classic, which is held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
