DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke swimming and diving team will cap off the 2005 portion of the 2005-06 season this weekend with the annual three-day Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason University. The women's team hopes to defend its 2004 Patriot Invite title, while the men will look to improve on a runner-up finish in the event, which begins Friday.
In their first year with head coach Dan Colella in charge, both men and women have enjoyed early success this season. At Maryland Nov. 5, the women (4-3) won their first Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet in 12 years against Miami, and the men (2-3) took home their first ACC dual victory since 1998 with a win over Maryland. Both teams are coming off losses to No. 22 North Carolina Nov. 8 but are looking to get back on the winning track at George Mason.
Last year, the men's team set three Duke records, two of which were dropped even lower later in the season. Junior Kevin Arthofer recorded a 56.55 100 breaststroke to break a 24-year-old school record held by All-America Eric Steinhouse. The 200 and 400 medley relay teams registered the fastest Duke times at the time but broke those records again by the end of the season. Senior Jackie Rodriguez repeated a win in the 200 breaststroke from the year before and held onto a meet record of 2:17.74 she set in the event in 2003.
Both men and women maintained first-place leads throughout the first two days of the 2004 Patriot Invitational, but Yale edged the Duke men out of the title on the final day, winning 797.5-760.5. The women topped Yale, their closest competitor in the 11-team field, 863-726.
Though the Blue Devils have competed in several double-dual meets in 2005, the Patriot Invitational will be the first that features more than four teams and spans more than a day. Swimming action begins at 10 a.m. Friday, with diving commencing at noon, and will continue through Sunday evening.
