DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke swimming and diving team will face competition from the Atlantic Coast Conference Saturday when it heads to the University of Maryland for a meet at 2 p.m. The men (1-2) will battle Maryland, while the women (3-1) will perform in their third double dual meet of the year, facing Maryland and Miami.
Both men and women are ready for competition after taking a break last weekend. The women are coming off a strong performance after defeating both UNC Wilmington and Richmond on Oct. 22. The scores remained close throughout the meet, but the Blue Devils pulled through, thanks in large part to three women and one relay team who garnered five first place finishes.
Freshman Lauren Gonzalez picked up her first collegiate win on the one-meter diving board, senior Katie Ness doubled in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke for the second straight meet, junior Jackie Rodriguez repeated a win in the 200 backstroke, and the 400 medley relay team opened the meet with a win. Also notable was the team's performance in the 200 backstroke. Ness topped the competition, but sophomore Danielle Spearman and freshman Erin Frizzell finished second and third to build points.
The men lost to Wilmington Oct. 22, but did not go down without a fight. Freshman Nick Campisano continued to show strength, qualifying for the NCAA Zone Championships on the three-meter diving board to complement his one-meter qualifying performance from the week before. Senior Andy Storm and sophomore Scott Champagne picked up individual titles in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, and the trio of sophomore Matt Rinehart, junior Jay Ashenfelter and Champagne swept the top three 500 freestyle spots.
Both men and women will look to avenge last year's losses to Maryland in the second time this season they have faced ACC opponents. The women will face stiff competition from the defending ACC Champion, as Maryland won its first conference crown last year. Action begins at 2 p.m. at Maryland's Campus Recreation Center.
