DURHAM, N.C. -- Coming off big wins at Maryland over the weekend, the Duke swimming and diving team will head to North Carolina Tuesday for a dual meet with the Tar Heels. The Blue Devil men enter the contest with a 2-2 record after defeating Maryland Saturday to record their first ACC dual meet victory since 1998. The women are 4-2 after earning their first ACC win since 1993 over Miami and losing a close battle to defending ACC champion Maryland.
Freshman diver Nick Campisano and senior swimmer Andy Storm led the men's competition, each sweeping the individual titles in both events in which they competed. Campisano, who has already qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships in both diving events, won the one and three-meter dives Saturday to garner his first collegiate individual titles. Storm knocked down his career best 1000 freestyle time by over six seconds, swimming a 9:54.84 and defeating his closest competitor by nearly six seconds. Storm also picked up a win in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a season-best 2:07.47 and winning his third straight title in that event.
Senior Katie Ness once again guided the women's team, winning the 200 IM for the third consecutive meet and just missing her third 200 backstroke title by 0.04 seconds. Ness' 100 backstroke split of 56.78 in the 400 medley relay is the fourth-best time in the conference this season, and her 2:05.73 200 IM from Saturday ranks third among ACC competitors.
The Blue Devils will face nationally ranked North Carolina in their fourth meet of the season. The No. 22 Tar Heel women (3-1) picked up a pair of wins against North Dakota and Minnesota over the weekend, and the No. 22 men (1-2) defeated North Dakota but lost to No. 9 Minnesota. Action begins at 5 p.m. at UNC's Koury Natatorium.
