DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior Katie Ness, a member of the Duke swimming and diving team, has been inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Members must be in the top eight to 10 percent of their classes and are voted in by a panel of Phi Beta Kappa professors.
Ness has appeared on the Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll every year and was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III and honorable mention Academic All-America selection in 2004-05. While compiling an impressive academic resume, Ness has also been a consistent leader on the Blue Devil swimming and diving team since coming to Duke in 2002-03.
Ness finished her sophomore season in 2003-04 as Duke's first ACC Champion since 1981, winning the 200 IM and advancing to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 18th. In 2004-05, she earned NCAA “B” standards in both the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Ness owns school records in six individual events and has been a part of five record-setting relay teams.
Midway through the 2005-06 campaign, the Duke women's swimming and diving team holds a 4-3 dual meet record, highlighted by the program's first ACC dual victory in 12 years with a win over Miami Nov. 5. The team next competes Jan. 14 at Davidson.
