MADISON, WIS. - Duke's run at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship came to an end on Saturday as the eight-ranked Blue Devils fell, 4-3, to 14th-ranked Kentucky at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. Duke falls to 4-1, while Kentucky improves to 6-1.
For the first time this season, the Blue Devils lost the doubles point on Saturday after Kentucky's 11th-ranked Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk rallied past Jennifer Zika and Kristin Cargill, 9-7, at the second position. Duke's tandem of Parker Goyer and Clelia Deltour remained perfect in dual match action as they cruised to an 8-3 win over Lara Maurer and Christine Simpson at the third slot, but Kentucky's sixth-ranked duo of Aibika Kalsarieva and Sarah Foster then defeated 42nd-ranked Jackie Carleton and Katie Blaszak, 8-4, at the first position.
In singles action, seventh-ranked Kalsarieva gave Kentucky a 2-0 lead as she won 6-2, 1-0 after 56th-ranked Carleton retired. Deltour, a freshman for the Blue Devils, continued her stellar play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Schwenk at the fourth slot to put Duke on the board, 2-1.
Blaszak, a senior from Fairfax, Va., then evened the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 30th-ranked Sarah Foster at the second position. Kentucky came back to take the lead again as Maurer knocked out Tory Zawacki, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
Facing a 3-2 deficit, Duke senior Saras Arasu made a huge comeback at the sixth slot after losing the first set, 4-6, to Daniella Petrinski. Arasu, who is ranked 96th in the nation, won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the score at 3-3.
The match came down to the third position with 58th-ranked Coventry dueling against 108th-ranked Zika. Coventry came out and won the first set, 6-4, but Zika won the second set, 7-6, after saving seven match points in the process. In the third set, Coventry was too tough as she defeated Zika, 6-3, to win the match for the Wildcats.
Duke will next host Old Dominion on Feb. 16 at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at 4:00 p.m.
