ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Frank Cornely went 1-1 on day one at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, falling to 12th-seeded C.B. Dolloway of Arizona State in the first round, but advancing to day two with a win over Old Dominion's Adam Wright in the first round of the consolation bracket. Cornely will face Indiana's Andy Rios on Friday morning.
The Pennsauken, N.J. product's final bid for All-America status got off to a rough start, as he suffered a 10-4 loss to Dolloway in the first round. The match was even for the first two minutes before Dolloway got in deep on a shot. Cornely tried to roll through the move, but got stuck on his back, resulting in four points for Dolloway. Cornely answered in the second period with two takedowns to close the gap to 6-4, but could get no closer. Dolloway added a takedown and a pair of near-fall points to secure the final margin.
Cornely moved into the consolation bracket and faced Wright. The two had faced off twice this season, with Wright taking the first meeting at the UNC Open and Cornely evening the score at the Midlands Invitational. The Blue Devil broke the tie on Thursday, earning an 8-5 victory. Cornely scored two takedowns in the first period to take an early lead and continued to keep the scoring up with one takedown in each of the next two periods.
Today's match with Rios will be an opportunity for Cornely to avenge a loss to Rios in a dual meet in 2004. If Cornely keeps winning, he will have two matches Friday morning and one Friday night. Should he win all three he will place in the top eight and become Duke's first All-American.
