RALEIGH, N.C. - For the 44th straight time, the 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team knocked off N.C. State on Wednesday as the Blue Devils downed the Wolfpack, 5-2, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Duke improved to 11-5 overall, 2-0 in the ACC, while N.C. State fell to 7-9, 0-6.
Playing without its top three players due to injury, the Blue Devils were able to notch its second league victory of the season. Senior Katie Blaszak, sophomore Jennifer Zika and junior Jackie Carleton each did not compete in singles due to injuries.
Duke jumped on N.C. State early, winning all three doubles contests to collect the first point. On the first court, Kristin Cargill and Tory Zawacki downed Barbara Orlay and Elin Stahl Johansson, 8-5. Then, the Blue Devils clinched the point as Jackie Carleton and Parker Goyer knocked off Agustina Arechavaleta and Danielle Stadelmann, 8-5. At No. 3, the Durham duo of Saras Arasu and Lauren Archer completed the Blue Devils doubles round trifecta with a win over Julia Roach and Carmen Torres, 8-6.
"It was good to win the doubles point," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "No matter who the competition is, whether it is N.C. State or Florida, it is important to win the doubles matches. We really need to work on our doubles play."
N.C. State came back to even the match, 1-1, as Orlay defeated Duke's Arasu at the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Then, the Blue Devils picked up a win at No. 2 as Clelia Deltour defeated Arechavaleta,6-1, 6-2. Duke collected a third point when Cargill downed Johansson, 6-2, 7-5.
Stadelmann and Duke's Zawacki battled back and forth in a grueling match that ended with Zawacki collecting the win in a tiebreak, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). After dropping the first frame at No. 5 singles, Roach battled back to collect the second set and force Archer into a tiebreak of their own. Roach, who leads NC State with 10 singles wins, persevered and came out on top, 4-6, 6-4 (11-9). Goyer then trumped Torres, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 to give the Blue Devils a 5-2 victory.
"We played well today," said Ashworth. "It was good and bad with the injuries as we were able to play some people today in a pressure situation with it being an ACC match that might have to see action later this season."
The Blue Devils improve to 44-0 in the series versus the Wolfpack. Duke will return to action this weekend as the Blue Devils host Miami on Apr. 2 at 1:00 p.m. and Florida State on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
