Dawn Chuck, a graduate of Brown University and 8-year member of the Jamaican National Swimming Squad, will be the new assistant coach at Duke for the 2005-06 swimming and diving season, head coach Dan Colella announced Monday.
"I am very excited to have Dawn join the Duke swimming family," said Colella. "I feel that we will complement one another well as we start off on this new era in Duke Swimming and Diving. Having graduated from Brown University, she understands what our student-athletes are facing in terms of academic and athletic challenges at an institution like Duke University. She also brings a wealth of competitive experience that will benefit the members of our team."
Chuck comes to Duke with extensive international and collegiate swimming experience. She is a two-time participant in the Olympic Games, having represented Jamaica in 2000 and 2004, and has earned medals in the Carifta Games, Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, Centro Americano y del Caribe Nataciones and Caribbean and Central American Games.
Chuck graduated in 2002 with a B.S. degree in Psychology from Brown, where she was a team captain her senior year and is still on the record books for being a member of the 400-freestyle and 800-freestyle relay teams that set school records in 2001. She was the Ivy League Champion in the 200 Freestyle in 2001 and the 100 Freestyle in 2002 and participated in the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Chuck went on to earn a master's degree in Sport Psychology at the University of Florida in 2005. While in Gainesville, Chuck worked as a swimming instructor for Swim America of Gainesville and the Gator Swim Club, but the position at Duke will be her first at the collegiate coaching level.
"I'm excited to become a part of the Duke team," said Chuck. "After talking to Coach Colella, I can see that there is a lot of room for improvement, and the team is very motivated and excited for change. I am excited to be involved in that."
