DURHAM, N.C. -- Fifth-ranked Daniela Bercek and 99th-ranked Clelia Deltour both advanced to the semifinals of the Maryland Invitational, forcing a showdown between the two Duke women's tennis players Saturday at the Tennis Center at College Park. Bercek and Deltour were two of five Blue Devils who competed in the tournament Friday.
As the top seed in the Flight A singles bracket, Bercek had a bye in the first round before defeating Janet Kim of Yale in the second, 6-2, 6-0. Deltour played two matches, defeating Lauren Seaman of LSU, 6-2, 6-3, and Maryland's Marianne Baker, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Jessi Robinson also competed in Flight A. Robinson fell in the first round to Mykala Hedberg and moved on to a consolation bracket, where she had a bye and then topped Rashmee Patil of Yale, 6-1, 6-1. Robinson will face Kiki Strastny of Notre Dame in the consolation finals Saturday.
Bercek and Robinson, the No. 11 doubles team in the NCAA, won their first match against LSU's pair of Lauren Seaman and Tiffany Tucker, 8-2. The Duke duo advances to the semifinals, where they will take on Janet and Aimee Kim from Yale Saturday.
Senior Lauren Archer and junior Parker Goyer both competed in Flight B of the singles bracket. Archer fell 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 to Washington State's Amy Toth and just barely lost to LSU's Tiffany Tucker in consolation, 7-6, 7-6. Goyer fell to Ashley Miles of Yale, 6-2, 6-3 and will face Stacey Percival of West Virginia in consolation Saturday. The pair also competed in the doubles Flight A bracket, giving up an 8-5 decision to Yale's Olivia Nix and Rashmee Patil.
Bercek, Deltour, Archer and Goyer were making their first 2005 appearances in the tournament, while Robinson played one match in last weekend's William & Mary Invitational. Action resumes Saturday at the Tennis Center at College Park.
