NEWARK, DEL. -- Senior Katie Grant and the Blue Devil field hockey team remained undefeated Saturday, trouncing host Delaware, 7-2, in the first game of the Blue Hen Classic. Grant, who led the team in points in 2004, matched a career-high with nine points on four goals and an assist to pace the offense to its second seven-goal game of the season.
"Overall, we were pretty pleased with the team's performance today," said head coach Beth Bozman. "There were two little letdowns when Delaware got the ball past us, but I thought that the team moved well, and they moved with speed."
Grant opened the scoring for the day, converting an unassisted shot at the 5:58 mark. She was followed not long after by classmate Nicole Dudek, who scored off an assist from junior Amy Stopford at 10:07 in the first half. The pair of seniors were the top scoring tandem in the NCAA last season and combined for six of Duke's seven goals Saturday.
"Katie is getting better in every single game," said Bozman. "She is playing very well, and we look forward to seeing what else she will do for us this season."
Junior Marcy Burns picked up her first goal of the season and the third of her career on an unassisted play at 19:59. At 21:24, Grant and Dudek teamed up with Dudek scoring her second goal of the game and Grant adding an assist to make the score 4-0 before the Blue Hens attempted a single shot.
Delaware earned its first goal of the game at 32:34 when Erin Marihugh put an unassisted goal past the Duke defense.
Grant came out on a roll in the second half, scoring all three of Duke's goals. Her second goal of the game came 7:10 into the second half. There was a flurry of scoring in the last five minutes of the contest, with Delaware's Katie Evans converting a penalty corner with help from Amanda Warrington and Marihugh with 5:07 left. Grant answered by scoring off a Duke corner on a pass from freshman Julie Tromp with 2:66 in the game. Grant added her final goal with only 42 seconds left.
The Blue Devils dominated the offense, outshooting the Blue Hens 26-8 and holding a 13-3 advantage on corner shots. Williams and senior Christy Morgan combined for a 75 percent save percentage in goal, stopping six of eight shots. Morgan returned from a back injury to play her first game of the season, putting in just over 17 minutes. Williams, who played nearly 53 minutes, allowed her first goal in three games this year. Delaware goalie Megan Allen played the entire game and registered 10 saves.
Duke improved to 3-0 on the season, while Delaware fell to 3-1. The Blue Devils return to action Sunday when the team takes on Ohio State at 11:30 a.m. at Delaware's Rullo Stadium. The two teams have not faced each other since 1992 in a 2-1 Duke victory.
