CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team dropped their eighth consecutive dual meet, falling to rival North Carolina, 22-15, on Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Blue Devils fall to 0-8 on the season and 0-3 in the ACC while the Tar Heels improve to 13-8-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action.
The dual meet began at 133 pounds and North Carolina grabbed a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 win by Jared Royer over Duke freshman Michael Degli Obizzi. The Tar Heels went ahead 6-0 after Vincent Ramirez came back from an early 5-0 deficit to defeat Duke junior Philip Wightman, 10-6, in the 141-pound weight class.
Junior Daniel Shvartsman picked up the Blue Devils' first win of the night at 149 pounds, defeating Isaiah Britton, 6-3, to cut Carolina's lead to three points. The Tar Heels rebounded at 157 pounds as Brian Baglio's 6-1 decision win over freshman Cameron Harms put the home team back up by six.
The Blue Devils nearly picked up their second win of the night at 165 pounds but Garrett Atkinson, the defending ACC champion in the class, escaped with a 5-4 victory after scoring a takedown of redshirt freshman Aaron Glover with less than 10 seconds remaining in the third period.
Alex Maciag pushed the Tar Heel lead to 15-3 with a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over Duke senior Levi Craig at 174 pounds. North Carolina's Justin Dobies followed with an overtime victory of his own, defeating redshirt freshman Dan Tulley, 7-4, at 184 pounds.
With an 18-3 lead after seven matches, North Carolina head coach C.D. Mock decided to rest David Dashiell at 197 pounds, giving Duke a six-point win via forfeit. Carolina's Spencer Nadolsky, ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Coaches Poll at heavyweight, registered the biggest win of the night, earning a 10-2 major decision victory over freshman Wade Van Sickle to put the Heels up 22-9.
With the meet in hand and only one match remaining, Mock rested Bobby Shaw at 125 pounds, giving Duke another win via forfeit.
The Blue Devils will look to rebound on Saturday as they get set to take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C., at 5 p.m.
Carlyle Cup
With Tuesday night's win, North Carolina holds a 7-5 lead over Duke in this year's Carlyle Cup, which is a yearlong competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C.
