NORFOLK, VA. - The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team fell to third-ranked Old Dominion at Foreman Field on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, to put the Blue Devils' season record at 12-4 (2-2 ACC).
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie for the majority of the first half, until Old Dominion managed to get the ball into the circle in the closing seconds. As a scramble in front the the net occured, Lady Monarch Jo Ann van Aswegen slipped a shot past Duke junior goalie Caitlin Williams with 23.7 seconds remaining in the half to put the Lady Monarchs up, 1-0.
The first half saw Duke take four shots, while Old Dominion got off nine. Corners were sparse, as Old Dominion received three to Duke's two.
Neither team was able to find thet net in the second half as it would be a battle of defenses. Sophomore Marian Dickinson took Duke's only shot of the second period, while Old Dominion took three. No penalty corners were awarded in the final 35 minutes.
Williams ended the afternoon with six saves for Duke, with four of those stops coming in the first half. Kelly Driscoll made two stops in goal for the Lady Monarchs on the day. Old Dominion outshot Duke, 12-5, as the Lady Monarchs improved to 14-2 on the season.
Duke will return home on Oct. 21 to host No. 13 California at Williams Field at 1 p.m. The following weekend, the Blue Devils will close out the regular season at home versus No. 10 Virginia on Oct. 28. The ACC Championships are slated to takes place on Nov. 2-5 and will be hosted by North Carolina.
