DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will begin their 2006-07 slate this weekend with the ECU Diving Invitational on Friday and the Blue-White scrimmage on Saturday.
Several colleges in the state of North Carolina will be participating in Friday's ECU Diving Invitational, hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, N.C., including ACC foes N.C. State and North Carolina. The meet allows Duke head diving coach to get a look at his squad, as the invitational is run in a different format than the usual dual meet. Divers will be scored on three dives instead of six on the 1- and 3-meter boards each.
“It is a good early-season guage of where we're at competition-wise without the pressure of having to have everything ready for a regular-season dual meet” said Duke diving head coach Andy Scott. “It also gives us a chance to see schools we'll be competing against later on in the season."
Action at the ECU Diving Invitational will begin at 12 p.m., with the annual Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage set to take place the following day (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at Duke's Taishoff Aquatic Center.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 2005-06 season that saw the men's squad go 3-6 (1-4 ACC) and the women's squad go 5-6 (1-5 ACC). Both squads posted an Atlantic Coast Conference dual-meet victory for the first time in a number of years at the same meet in November at Maryland. At the 2006 ACC Championships, the women's team established three Duke records and the men threw out two, on their way to 10th and ninth place finishes, respectively.
The swimming and diving teams will be in action at their first dual meet on Oct. 21 when the Blue Devil men meet UNC-Wilmington and the women meet UNC-Wilmington and Richmond in Wilmington, N.C., at 11 a.m.
The Blue Devils' first home meet will take place on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. as Duke takes on Maryland and N.C. State in ACC matchups.
