BOILING SPRINGS and PEMBROKE, N.C. ? Duke wrestling competed in two different events this past weekend: a quad meet with Newberry, Gardner-Webb, and Wagner, and the UNC-Pembroke Open. In Boiling Springs, N.C., Duke was edged by Newberry before defeating Gardner-Webb and Wagner, and in Pembroke, N.C., redshirt sophomore Konrad Dudziak won five matches on his way to winning the meet in the heavyweight division.
Duke began the quad meet by dropping a hotly-contested matchup with Newberry College by a score of 20-17. Junior Kellan McKeon scored a 9-2 decision at 125 pounds, and redshirt junior Bryan Gibson won his match at 133 pounds with a 19-5 major decision. Junior Wes Kuser then lost 10-3 at 141 pounds before freshman Voris Tejada won a 3-1 decision in his match at 149 pounds and sophomore Addison Nuding won 5-2 at 157 pounds. Redshirt freshman John Barone would be the only other Blue Devil to score a victory in the upper weight classes, with a 12-3 major decision at 174 pounds.
The next dual with Wagner would be all Duke, as they would win eight of ten matches enroute to a 41-9 triumph. McKeon and Gibson won again at the 125 and 133 pound classes, and Kuser pinned his opponent at the 2:05 mark of the 141 pound match. Tejada dropped a decision 5-3 at 149 pounds before Duke reeled off five straight victories. Nuding felled his competition at 3:20 at 157, and redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover also pinned his opponent 1 minute and 43 seconds into the match at 165 pounds. Barone and redshirt sophomore Dan Tulley won by forfeit at 174 and 184 pounds respectively, and redshirt junior Patrick Keenum won a decision 8-2 in the 197 pound division.
In the third matchup, Duke beat host Gardner-Webb 26-16. Gibson and Kuser scored pins in their matches, before Tejada and Nuding added major decision victories. Glover and Barone made it six straight match wins against Gardner-Webb for the Blue Devils, with decisions of 11-7 and 5-0, respectively. Barone is undefeated this year for Duke, with a 7-0 record after two meets.
At Pembroke, Dudziak rolled over his competition, pinning his first two opponents and then scoring three straight decisions on his way to a first place finish as a heavyweight. Dudziak continues the success he had last year, when he placed third at the ACC Tournament and had an 11-6 overall record.
Duke will travel this Sunday to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the all day UPenn Invitational. It is an open meet and will not count towards the Blue Devils' record.
