FAIRFAX, Va. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will head into the final day of action at the Patriot Invitational on Sunday, as the women currently are in second place while the men are in third.
The Blue Devil women maintained their second-place stature on day two of the invitational, adding to their point total of 234 points from day one to put their tally going into the final day of action at 495 points.
In finals action, the women's 200 medley relay team of Erin Frizzell, Meredith Bannon, Shannon Beall and Danielle Spearman took second place, touching in 1:48.14 to contribute 34 points to the Blue Devils' score. Also placing second in relay finals action was the 800 free relay team of Spearman, Jackie Fasano, Jackie Rodriguez and Beall, as they finished in 7:42.46.
Individually, Rodriguez took first place in the 400 IM (4:28.75), while Beall took first in the 100 fly (57.00). Spearman posted a first place finish in the 100 back, improving a preliminary time of 58.09 to 56.99 in the finals.
The Blue Devil men improved on day two of action, to move up to third place after being in fourth place following day one. Duke tallied 119 points on day one, increasing that point total to 361 on day two.
Freshman Eric Winnard contributed immensely by winning the 3-meter diving event with a finals score of 301.70, improving upon a preliminary score of 279.20 to give the Blue Devils 20 points. Scott Champagne added 24 points, by placing third in the 400 IM (4:10.02) and was followed by Jay Ashenfelter who contributed 15 points by placing fourth in the same event (4:11.88).
Leading on both the men's and women's side of competition, is UMBC, as the women hold a narrow 16-point lead over Duke (511 points) and the men hold a commanding lead (694.5 points).
The three-day event will wrap-up competition on Nov. 19 with preliminary action beginning at 9 a.m. and the finals set to start at 5 p.m. at George Mason's Aquatic & Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.
