FAIRFAX, VA. - The Duke swimming and diving teams placed second and third at the three-day Patriot Invitational this weekend, as the women posted 753 points for a second-place finish and the men tallied 540 points to place third.
Senior Jackie Rodriguez placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a finals time of 1:04.96, second in the 200 breaststroke with a finals time of 2:18.53 and first in the 400 IM, recording a lifetime best time of 4:28.75. Rodriguez totaled 68 points on the weekend in individual events, as she also placed fourth in the 500 freestyle finals.
Junior Danielle Spearman and freshman Shannon Beall also had a great weekend, as Beall placed second in the 200 IM finals, with Spearman placing fourth. The two also were part of the second-place 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay teams. Beall also took first place in the 100 fly and 200 fly, while Spearman placed first in the 100 backstroke event.
Freshman Julie Brummond took first on the 1-meter board and second on the 3-meter board, notching scores of 260.20 and 270.60, respectively.
The Blue Devil women were consistently in second place throughout the weekend, narrowly trailing first-place finisher UMBC. The Retrievers tallid 772 points for the top finish.
On the men's side, freshman Eric Winnard also impressed on the diving board, as he won the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Winnard missed the pool record on the 1-meter board by a single point, posting a score of 354.3, and also notched a score of 301.70 on the 3-meter board, as he contributed 40 points to the Duke men's squad's final tally.
Other highlights of the Blue Devil men's team's outing this weekend, included junior Scott Champagne posting a third-place finals finish in the 400 IM, as senior Jay Ashenfelter touched soon after in the same event for a fourth-place finish, and freshman Andrew Clark's fourth-place 1650 freestyle finish, as a strong team effort continues to prove effective for Duke.
The Blue Devil men were in fourth place at the end of action on day one and moved into third at the conclusion of day two's events, where they would eventually finish, behind a first-place showing by UMBC (1037 points) and a second-place finish by No. 22 North Carolina (626.5 points).
The Patriot Invititational closed out Duke's first portion of the season, as the Blue Devil men and women will look to begin the start of the second portion on Jan. 4, at the Jamaican Holiday Invitational.
