DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams split against ACC foes N.C. State and Maryland on Saturday at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion, as the Blue Devil men defeated Maryland, 168-131, and the women defeated N.C. State, 160-138.
Through the 1-meter diving event, the men held an 81-68 lead over Maryland, while N.C. State tallied 114 points to Duke's 35. The Wolfpack would end up posting 209 points to Duke's final of 90 points, as Duke's record now stands at 2-1 on the season.
At the same point in the meet, the Duke women led N.C. State, 88-61, while Maryland posted 80 points to Duke's 63. The Terps added to that total to end with 155 points to Duke's final tally of 132 points, as the Blue Devils sit at 3-1 on the season.
Three Blue Devil divers notched scores that qualified them for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Freshman Julie Brummond finished first on the 1-meter board with a score of 305.40, setting a school record that dated back to 2000, while sophomore Nick Campisano placed first on the 3-meter board, besting his own school record he set last season, with a score of 345.75. Freshman Eric Winnard also beat Campisano's old school record, placing second with a score of 343.15.
Turning in solid performances in the pool for the Duke women, were junior Danielle Spearman, senior Jackie Rodriguez and freshman Shannon Beall. Spearman and Beall notched first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly events, respectively, while Rodriquez placed first in two events, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Rodriguez's performance was a repeat of her performance versus UNC-Wilmington and Richmond two weeks ago, as she won both breaststroke events at that tri-meet as well. Beall's finish in the 100 fly was also a repeat performance from her first collegiate meet.
While no Duke men notched first place finishes versus N.C. State, a team effort lifted the Blue Devils over Maryland, as Duke swept the top three places in numerous events versus the Terps. Freshman Andrew Clark continued to impress as he posted two second-place finishes (500 free and 1000 free) as a follow up from his two-victory collegiate debut versus UNC-Wilmington in those events in Duke's season opener.
Complete results of Saturday's tri-meet will be available on GoDuke.com on Sunday.
The Duke swimming and diving teams will be in action next on Wednesday, Nov. 8, when the Blue Devils travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on North Carolina.
