DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Wednesday for a dual meet with rival North Carolina, set to begin at 5 p.m. at Koury Natatorium, with two Carlyle Cup points at stake.
One Carlyle Cup point will go to the winner of the men's meet and one to the winner of the women's meet, as Duke currently holds a solid lead in the 2006-07 standings, totaling 4.5 points to North Carolina's 1.5 points. The Carlyle Cup is a yearlong competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C., and this year's competition marks the seventh annual competition, as the all-time series is tied, 3-3.
The Blue Devil men and women have started the 2006-07 season on a great note, as the men's squad is 2-1 (1-1 ACC) and the women's squad is 3-1 (1-1 ACC) going into Wednesday's meet. Both teams posted a win over an ACC opponent this past Saturday, as the men's squad defeated Maryland and the women's squad defeated N.C. State at Duke's own Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion. Previously, the men's team recorded a win over UNC-Wilmington, while the women's team recorded wins over UNC-Wilmington and Richmond at Duke's season-opening meet in Wilmington, N.C.
The North Carolina men are ranked No. 22 nationally, but head into the meet with the Blue Devils with a record of 0-2 in dual meets, opening with losses to No. 9 Georgia and No. 6 Minnesota. The Tar Heel women are ranked No. 23, as they are currently 2-1 with a loss to No. 8 Georgia and wins over No. 17 Minnesota and Richmond.
