DURHAM, N.C. - The Division I Men Mideast Region rankings were released on Dec. 8, with four Duke singles players and two Blue Devil doubles tandems making the list.
Senior Peter Rodrigues is the highest-ranked Blue Devil, coming in at No. 11. The Estoril, Portugal, native went 7-6 this fall, finishing the fall season winning the his last five of seven matches. The 2005-06 campaign saw Rodrigues compile an overall record of 29-11 in singles competition, as he posted a 20-5 ledger at the No. 3 position. He tallied the best record on the team in ACC play with a 9-2 mark and was named to the ACC All-Conference team. Rodrigues finished the year ranked No. 68 in the final ITA singles rankings, as he was ranked in all but one listing, climbing as high as No. 56. This fall, he was ranked 44th nationally in the preseason rankings.
Sophomore Kiril Dimitrov ranks 14th in the Mideast Region, after going 8-6 in singles matches this fall; a record that included a semifinal appearance at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. The Sofia, Bulgaria, native joined the Duke program in January 2006 and compiled a spring singles record of 17-9, including a 15-8 mark in dual matches and a record of 7-3 in ACC play. Dimitrov was ranked as high as No. 98 in the FILA/ITA Singles Rankings in his first season as a Blue Devil.
Freshman Dylan Arnould ranks 19th regionally, as he is set to begin his initial spring campaign at Duke. The Northampton, Mass., native compiled a singles record of 4-4 this fall and went 2-1 in doubles play when combining with Rodrigues. Arnould reached the round of 16 as a singles and doubles competitor at the ITA Mideast Regionals in October. He was ranked 111th nationally in the preseason listings.
Rodrigues and Arnould combine to form the 11th-ranked doubles tandem in the Mideast Region.
Senior Joey Atas is the final Duke singles player ranked regionally, as he fills the No. 21 spot. The Baltimore, Md., native went 7-4 this fall; a record that included an appearance in the quarterfinals of ITA Mideast Regional action. After transferring from Ohio State, Atas ended his first season at Duke (2005-06) with an 18-14 record in singles (7-3 ACC) and 29-17 mark in doubles. An All-America selection in doubles after advancing to the quarterfinal round with Jonathan Stokke at the NCAA Championships, he finished the year ranked No. 10 in the final ITA doubles rankings with Stokke, ranking as high as No. 9 for two straight listings.
Atas combines with first-year transfer, David Goulet, to form the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the Mideast region. The two went 7-2 in the fall, reaching the championship match of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and the quarterfinals of the ITA Mideast Regionals.
Duke will be begin spring play at the Miami Invitational, held Jan. 13-15 in Miami, Fla., with the Blue Devils' home opener set for Jan. 24 versus Old Dominion.
