COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Jacob McCafferty will head to the bonus finals of Thursday's ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships after swimming a career-best 1:53.43 in the 200 IM preliminaries Thursday. McCafferty knocked two seconds off his previous best time to finish 23rd overall in the preliminary round, 13 spots ahead of his 36th-place seeding.
Sophomore Ryan Packer tied a career best in the 50 freestyle in the preliminary round of the ACC Championships Thursday to earn a spot as an alternate for the bonus finals, set to begin Thursday evening. Packer's 20.95 was the best by a Duke swimmer this season and matched his top mark from the ACC Championships last year.
Seeded 44th heading into the ACC meet, Packer finished 26th in the preliminaries to be selected as a finals alternate. If he gets to compete again Thursday night in the 50 free, he could have a chance to break the 15-year-old Duke record, which stands at 20.51.
Thirteen other Blue Devils had career-best performances Thursday morning, including eight in the 200 IM -- junior Kevin Arthofer (1:53.92), sophomore Scott Champagne (1:54.41), sophomore Matt Rinehart (1:54.77), junior Alex Sidelnik (1:56.66), freshman Jordan Charles (1:56.73), sophomore Peter Osterland (1:57.89), freshman Nick Schilling (2:02.27), freshman Kyle Barrett (2:03.60) and sophomore Garrick Berberich (2:06.66).
Besides Packer, four notched top times in the 50 freestyle, including freshman Andy Ward (21.94), sophomore Jesse Sandberg (22.13), freshman Justin Mullen (22.83) and sophomore Brett Sauers (23.85), while senior Andy Storm shaved .07 seconds off his best 500 freestyle time, set at the ACC's last year, to finish in 4:43.78.
Finals for the 500 and 50 freestyle and 200 IM begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the 200 freestyle relay will close out the day's competition.
