COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Kevin Arthofer once again qualified for the consolation finals, where he will have a chance to score for the Duke men's swimming and diving team on the last day of the 2006 ACC Championships at the University of Maryland Saturday. One day after breaking the Duke 100 breaststroke record twice, Arthofer swam a season-best 2:03.33 in the 200 breaststroke to finish 14th in the preliminaries and lead a Duke team that produced 15 career-best times.
Three Duke swimmers will appear in the bonus finals Saturday evening with freshman Adam Moody qualifying for an alternate position in the 200 backstroke due to his personal-best 1:55.84. In the backstroke bonus will be senior Billy Pearce, who swam a career-best 1:50.03 and junior Jacob McCafferty, who finished in a season-best 1:53.46. Senior Andy Storm also made the bonus finals in the 200 breaststroke with his season-best time of 2:06.82.
Every Duke contender in the 100 freestyle notched a personal record Saturday, with sophomore Ryan Packer touching in 46.14, sophomore Matt Rinehart in 46.87, freshman Jordan Charles in 47.4, sophomore Jesse Sandberg in 47.86, sophomore Peter Osterland in 48.4, freshman Andy Ward in 48.68 and freshman Justin Mullen in 49.32.
The 200 butterfly also saw every Duke competitor register personal bests. Sophomore Scott Champagne swam a 1:56.14, closely tailed by Garrick Berberich in 1:56.46. Junior Jay Ashenfelter clocked 1:57.71, followed by freshmen Nick Schilling (1:58.52) and Kyle Barrett (1:59.4). Sophomore Brett Sauers also set a career best in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:15.7.
The 2006 ACC Championships will conclude with the finals and the 400 freestyle relay Saturday starting at 7 p.m.
