
Jonathan Stokke Receives ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship

Durham, N.C. - Jonathan Stokke was named the 2006 recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship at the NCAA Championships in Stanford, Calif. on Monday night.
Stokke, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., became the first player in Duke history to win the national award. He was the Mideast Regional winner of the award, joining current assistant coach Ramsey Smith as the only other Duke player to receive the regional honor. Smith was the regional selection in 2000 and 2001. The award goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Ranked No. 46 in the ITA singles rankings, Stokke will next compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at Stanford, Calif. He received an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Singles Tournament for the first time in his career and will also team up with Joey Atas to compete in his first ever NCAA Doubles Tournament. Stokke finished the team season with a dual match record of 14-12 in singles and an overall mark of 29-19. He won all three of his singles matches in the ACC Tournament and helped the Blue Devils rally from a 3-0 defecit in the championship match against Virginia. He became the 13th Blue Devil to be named ACC Tournament MVP. Earlier in the season he received the ITA Sportsmanship Award at the National Team Indoor Championships. In the fall, he shared the singles title at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championships and won the doubles title with Atas at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Teaming with Atas, Stokke posted a doubles record of 25-12 on the season, including a 14-9 record in dual matches and 8-3 mark in the ACC. Stokke was also 6-4 in ACC singles play.
The NCAA Singles Championships will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the doubles championships beginning on Thursday at 10 a.m.
