DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke University head wrestling coach Clar Anderson announced on Thursday the signing of 10 student-athletes who will join the Blue Devil wrestling program in 2006. The 10-member class will bring strength and depth to the lineup and will look to be a key building block as the program continues to grow.
“We were fortunate and happy to fill out needs at the lowest and highest weight classes while still adding depth all along the roster,” Anderson said.
Three of the incoming freshmen will add depth to Duke's lower weight classes. Spencer Jasper, a two-time state champion and three-time freestyle state champion from Arizona will look to compete at 125 or 133 pounds for the Blue Devils. A Wrestling USA All-American as a senior, Jasper maintained a 4.1 GPA during his prep career.
James DiMaiolo will compete in the 125-pound weight class. A two-time district place winner in New Jersey, DiMaiolo was also a National Honor Society member who ranked fourth in his high school class academically. He is the son of John DiMaiolo, who wrestled for Duke from 1976-79.
Dominick Belvedere, a New York native, also looks to compete at 125 or 133 pounds. Belvedere was a three-time league champion and a county finalist as a senior.
Voris Tejada is expected to compete at 141 or 149 pounds. Tejada was a three-time state place winner in New Jersey and was ranked in the top ten percent of his class academically.
Jared Sernoffsky will compete in the 149 or 157-pound weight class for the Blue Devils. Sernoffsky took fourth in the 3A division of Pennsylvania as a senior.
Chase Macer will also compete at 157 pounds. Macer reached the single-division California state tournament as a senior and was twice named as an all-area selection.
A three-time Missouri state tournament place winner, Matthew Koelling is expected to compete at 165 pounds for the Blue Devils. During his high school career, Koelling earned two All-America citations and was a National Honor Society member.
Daniel Torres, a two-time district finalist from Austin, Texas, will also compete in the 165-pound weight class at Duke.
Robert Holbrook is another highly successful Arizona wrestler joining the Duke squad. Holbrook, who will compete at 197 pounds, was an undefeated state champion and a western regional freestyle champion during his senior year.
Jack Richards will carry on his brother Russell's family legacy on the Duke wrestling team and plans on competing in the 197-pound weight class. Richards was a state champion and a three-time place winner in Georgia who also placed at the NHSCA Open Nationals in Virginia Beach.
When asked about his overall impressions of the recruiting class, Anderson stated, “I'm very excited to have ten talented and dedicated young men coming in to be a part of our program. I expect that they will all make the adjustment to college successfully and quickly and will have an immediate positive impact on our team, which is what we need to improve as a whole.”
