
Five Blue Devils Named ITA Scholar Athletes

The Blue Devils were one of 35 Division I schools that were named ITA All-Academic teams, qualifying with a 3.2 team GPA. They were the only one of 12 ACC schools honored. Duke advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the 10th time since 1995. They finished the year with a 22-7 overall record and claimed their 12th ACC Championship with a 4-3 victory over Virginia.
Five members of the 2005-06 team were named Scholar Athletes. Three of those earned the honor for the second time in their career. Joey Atas claimed the honor in 2004-05 at Ohio State. He transferred to Duke and posted a season record of 18-14 in singles and 7-3 mark in the ACC his junior year. He teamed with Jonathan Stokke to go 27-13 in doubles and advanced to the quarterfinals of NCAA doubles to earn All-America honors. Peter Rodrigues also had an outstanding junior season on and off the field. He is a scholar athlete for the second straight season. In dual matches, he tallied a record of 23-5 in singles and was 9-2 in the ACC. He finished with a 29-11 overall record. He was named All-ACC after teaming with Stephen Amritraj to go 10-1 in the ACC in doubles. The two were 16-8 overall. Alex Stone also was named a scholar athlete for the second straight year. He compiled a singles record of 6-4 in his sophomore campaign.
Seniors Christopher Brown and Stefan Rozycki both were named scholar athletes for the first time. Brown posted a record of 10-11 in singles to finish his career with a 38-33 all-time mark. He also ended with a 9-2 all-time record in the ACC. Rozycki went 2-2 this past season to end his career with a 14-12 overall record in singles.
The Blue Devils begin the fall season Sept. 8-10 when they head to Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
