The Blue Devils outshot the Seahawks by a 12-5 margin, but failed to nail down the game-winner in their first exhibition test of the season. The contest featured Duke Head Coach Robbie Church facing his daughter, Ashley, a junior striker on the UNCW squad.
“I thought we saw some good things in our match tonight, but we were also a very tired team after having two-a-day practices over the last week,” said Church. “UNC Wilmington was a very confident team that played well and hard.”
A total of 20 different Blue Devils saw action in the contest on Wednesday evening with nine players taking at least one shot. Senior tri-captain Darby Kroyer led Duke with three shots and Sarah McCabe added two shots on goal.
“I saw parts of the game where we really played well,” said Church. “Our younger players played good, but it was a typical exhibition game. We saw some things that we need to work on and will do so in practice prior to opening the season.”
Duke, ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll, wraps up its preseason slate on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at UNC Greensboro.
