
King and Yani Enjoying Success on Pro Tour

DURHAM, N.C. - Former Blue Devils Phillip King and Michael Yani are having successful 2006 seasons on the ATP Tour.
King, a four-time All-America at Duke, suffered a second-round loss to 64th-ranked Tim Henman at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C. King pushed Henman for two hours and 33 minutes before Henman was able to emerge victorious in three sets 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5. King earned a three-set victory over Bobby Reynolds in the first round 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3. King had perhaps his best tournament of the year at the Korea F3 futures tournament in Seogwipo, Korea on March 27. He won consecutive matches in straight sets before falling to Pavel Ivanov in the semifinals 4-6, 7-6(3), 3-6. King has also advanced to the quarterfinals in four other tournaments in 2006, including back-to-back challenger events, the Coffee Cup Challenger in Chikmagalur, India, and the PVG Open in Dharwad, India. He is currently ranked No. 387 in singles and was ranked as high as No. 351 on May 15.
There have been two tournaments where King has advanced to the semifinals in doubles. He teamed with Ti Chen at the HTV Challenger in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on March 13. The duo won two matches before falling to Hyung-Taik and Cecil Mamiit 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. At the North Shore Pro Tennis Championship in Winnetka, Ill., King teamed with Sadik Kadir and made it to the semifinals before losing to Scoville Jenkins and Rajeev Ram. King is currently ranked 552 in doubles with a high ranking of 499 on March 20 this year.
Yani recently competed at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles, a tournament in the US Open series. He qualified for the 32-man field and took No. 176 Lars Burgsmuller to three sets. Yani fell behind with a 6-4 loss in the first set but battled back to win the second 6-3. Burgsmuller than came back to win the final set 6-3.
A two-time All-America for the Blue Devils, Yani has won one tournament and advanced to the semifinals of two others in 2006. He competed in the futures USA F13 in Woodland, Calif on June 19. He won his first three matches in straight sets, including a victory over No. 426 Nick Lindahl 6-3, 6-1. After a three-set victory in the semifinals, Yani rallied to defeat Kevin Anderson in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to take the title. Yani also advanced to the semifinals of the Japan F5 futures in Munakata, Japan on May 29 and then the Sunset Moulding Yuba City Racquet Club Challenger in Yuba City, Calif. on June 5. He defeated King in the quarterfinals in Yuba City but lost 6-4, 6-0 to Sam Warburg in the next round. Yani is currently ranked 319 in singles with a season-high ranking of 296 on July 10.
In doubles, Yani won the Japan F4 futures in Munakata, Japan. He teamed up with Troy Hahn to defeat Michal Przysiezny and Mischa Zverev 7-5, 7-5. Yani is ranked 679 in doubles but was as high as 465 at the start of the year on January 2.
