MURRYSVILLE, Pa. ? Duke (6-3, 0-1 ACC) swept its first quad meet since Jan. 29, 2005 on Saturday. The Blue Devils defeated York 25-10, Apprentice 27-11 and Duquesne 25-13. Redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover at 165 pounds and sophomore Addison Nuding at 157 pounds led Duke by winning all three matches they competed in.
The Blue Devils met York to kick off the evening. The Spartans were ranked 14th nationally in Division III, yet the Blue Devils won seven of 10 matches in the dual. At 133 pounds, freshman Spencer Jasper had the most dominating performance as he pinned York's Tom Eidel at 2:01 if their bout. Freshman Matthew Koelling saw his first dual action of the season and won a major decision over the Spartans' Brian Adams, 14-4 at 174 pounds. Adams had been 19-6 this season prior to the match. Senior Philip Wightman (141 pounds), Nuding, Glover, redshirt freshman John Barone (184) and redshirt junior Patrick Keenum (197) all recorded decisions for the Blue Devils on the way to their team victory. York fell to 8-8 after losing all three competitions on the day.
Next up on the schedule for Duke was The Apprentice School, which is located in Newport News, Va. Once again, the Blue Devils won seven of 10 matches. Duke scored two technical falls in the dual: junior Wes Kuser defeated the Builder's Josh Flint 17-0 in 7:00 at 141 pounds and Nuding knocked off Matt Perry 18-0 at 6:09 of his 157-pound match. Glover scored a major decision over Apprentice's Rudy Leming, 11-3 at 165 pounds. Barone also tacked on a major decision 16-6 over Justin Gilliard. Saturday was the first time Barone wrestled this season at 184 pounds, and he improved his team-best overall record to 17-7 after going 2-1 for the day. Junior Kellan McKeon (125 pounds), senior Daniel Shvartsman (149), and Keenum (in overtime) all won decisions for Duke against Apprentice. The Builders finished the night 1-2, bringing their season record to 8-6.
The final matchup for Duke before heading home was Duquesne, the host of the meet. Continuing their trend on the evening, the Blue Devils won seven out of 10 bouts in the dual. Also common to all three victories was that Duke came back to win after having their opponent take the lead in the first couple of matches. Koelling scored the biggest victory over the Dukes, pinning Ryan Shula at 3:40 of their 174-pound match. Six Blue Devils would record decisions over Duquesne, including McKeon, Wightman, Shvartsman, Nuding (in triple overtime), Glover, and redshirt freshman Mike Tunick at the heavyweight class. Duquesne won its other two matchups and improved their record overall to 5-9 on the year.
Shvartsman continues to move up on the Blue Devils' career wins list. He currently ranks 12th with 78 career victories. Shvartsman is one win behind Jim Walsh in 11th place, and 27 wins behind all-time leader Bradd Weber.
The Blue Devils will return home for the first of three consecutive home meets on Jan. 24, versus Campbell and The Citadel at 7 p.m. Maryland is their next ACC foe, and that match will take place on Jan. 27 at 6p.m. Duke will wrap up that homestand on Jan. 31 versus North Carolina, in a meet that will be held at Chapel Hill High School.
